These aquatic organisms can be exposed to pollutants as a result of discharge of industrial wastewater into watercourses, and to avoid the adverse effects of contaminants on their functions, these organisms have to be detoxified by biochemical reactions.
Biochemical detoxification involves a series of reactions to break down or oxidise the compounds and either release products that are then excreted by the organism, or transform them into harmless or less harmful products that are recycled back into the environment.
Certain microalgae are known to transform and utilise a range of organic substances and contaminants, including atrazine, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), into more environmentally friendly end products. For example, monochlorobiphenyl (PCB153) is a toxic pollutant in many aquatic species, but some species of microalgae are known to transform and utilise it, making it relatively harmless (Carbon cycling of PCBs in marine ecosystems, Thériault and Lethem, J. Appl. Phycol. 18, 199-209 (2006)).
Some algae are known to grow in environments that contain contaminants such as hydrocarbons, PCBs and detergents. However, this ability to grow in such environments may mean that they are better equipped than other microorganisms to withstand and detoxify those compounds.
